Monument Restoration at Cedar Hill Cemetery

In 2001, Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation launched a monument restoration program designed to restore and preserve the historic monuments. Exposure to the elements causes bronze to crack, pit, lose detail and corrode. Restoring the monuments preserves their details and helps protect them from the atmospheric elements.

In 2004, the Foundation restored Dr. Horace Wells's monument on Section 4 and in 2007 the Foundation restored the Oswin Welles Monument on Section 1.

Other sculptures in need of restoration services include:

The Samuel and Elizabeth Colt monument on Section 2 is one of the Cemetery's oldest and most beautiful memorials. Erected shortly after the establishment of Cedar Hill Cemetery in 1864, the monument is in desperate need of restoration. Exposure to the elements has resulted in cracking, harmful deposits and discoloration. Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation launched the Colt Memorial Fundraising Campaign in December 2007, and we hope to raise $90,000 to preserve this historic monument, which attracts countless visitors each year. For information about supporting this campaign, email Wendi Fralick or call 860-956-3311.

The Parry monument on Section 5, which is an excellent example of a white bronze monument - commonly known as "zinkies." These monuments were manufactured between 1870 and 1912 by the Monumental Bronze Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Although subsidiaries of that company sold the monuments across the country, all of the original castings were done in Bridgeport.

The Clark Family monument on Section 1, signed by the well-known artist Truman Howe Bartlett (1869) is also in desperate need of restoration services. Discoloration, harmful deposits, and corrosive matter have enveloped the sculpture.
